Junior Football Championship

Kilshannig 2-11 Fermoy 1-08

Kilshannig got their North Cork Junior A Football Championship campaign off to a good start with an opening round victory over Fermoy at Killavullen last Saturday evening. A superb start from Kilshannig pushed them into an early lead that they would never relinquish. Goals from Jack Kearney and Alan O'Connell in the opening ten minutes were crucial as they surged into a nine point lead after the 1st quarter, 2-3 to no score, Darragh O'Sullivan and Tadhg Twomey also pointing from long distance. Both sides were guilty of some poor misses but the town side began to find the target as four answered points narrowed the gap to five at the break, 2-3 to 0-4. That lead was down to three shortly after the restart thanks to a well taken goal and while Kilshannig responded with a couple of points, Fermoy began to gain a foothold on the game, especially around the middle. That pressure began to show on the scoreboard leaving just two between the sides with less than 10 minutes remaining. However, Kilshannig finished strongly as they held firm in defence with Mossy O'Connell and Roddy O'Mahony excelling. They struck the final four points of the contest with O’Mahony and Killian O'Hanlon providing the important scores to seal a deserving six point victory.

Scorers: J Kearney 1-1, A O'Connell 1-0, T Twomey, D O'Sullivan, M Twomey 0-2 each, R O'Mahony, C Murphy, K O'Hanlon, P O'Connell 0-1 each.

North Cork U21 B Football Final

Mallow 1-09 Kilshannig 0-07

A valiant Kilshannig effort just came up short in their attempt to claim the North Cork U21 B Football Championship title with Mallow claiming the honours in a close encounter at Buttevant on Saturday evening last. The wet and windy conditions made for a low scoring tie with both sides struggling to adapt on occasions. Kilshannig played with the strong breeze in the opening half but were unable to take a lead into the half time break, which ultimately proved to be their undoing. Mallow got off to a lively start opening with two early points before Darragh O'Sullivan pointed twice in quick succession to draw level by the end of the 1st quarter. Both sides had a number of opportunities at either end but with just a further point each they remained level at the break, 0-3 to 0-3. In the second period, Mallow began brightly to move two in front and while they threatened to pull further ahead at times, Kilshannig remained resolute throughout. They twice drew level with Darragh O'Sullivan on target while Diarmuid O'Sullivan made his mark off the bench with a fine individual point. However, at various stages they struggled to break down a strong Mallow defensive effort and were unable to get themselves in front at any stage. The town side went three in front before Kilshannig rallied to cut the gap to two. Despite the best efforts of Jack Twomey and O'Sullivan that was as close as they got as a late a Kevin Taylor goal sealed a deserving win for Mallow. Mallow now represent Avondhu in the A county championship facing Carrigaline while Kilshannig play Shamrocks in the B County quarter final.

Scorers: Darragh O'Sullivan 0-5 (0-4 frees), J Kearney, Diarmuid O'Sullivan 0-1 each.
